OTTAWA — The Canada Revenue Agency announced Monday that this tax filing season will feature a new “interact-style” tipping screen, allowing Canadians to top up their tax bills with a “discretionary gratuity” to help cover the Ukraine aid that now accounts for a staggering 30% of the federal deficit.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne defended the move, noting that while the national deficit has reached its highest level since the pandemic, the ‘Kyiv-Before-Kelowna’ policy remains the government’s top priority. “We’ve hired a team of former Uber and DoorDash engineers to optimize the ‘tipping guilt’ interface,” Champagne explained, pausing to check his gold watch—a gift to himself following his most recent automatic parliamentary pay raise of $13,000. “Now, when a single mother files her return, she’ll be met with a friendly ‘I’m Feeling Generous’ button that forfeits her Canada Child Benefit directly to Kyiv before she can click ‘Submit’.”
The innovation isn’t limited to digital platforms. Across the country, Canadians lining up at record-breaking food banks are now being met by volunteers holding tablets. “Before we give you this bag of dented chickpeas, we just need you to answer a quick question on the screen about a 20% tip for the Ukrainian artillery fund,” said one volunteer.
While the “No Tip” option technically exists, a CRA spokesperson hinted that selecting it may trigger an immediate audit and a “provisional demerit” on the taxpayer’s social credit file. “It’s about choices,” the spokesperson said. “You can choose to help us fund the deficit, or you can choose to explain your 2022 T4 slips to a room full of angry bureaucrats.”
Experts note that with the current spending trajectory, the average Canadian is now working until August 15th just to cover the 30% portion of the deficit earmarked for overseas aid.
At publishing time, the CRA was testing a “Skip the Dishes” integration that allows the government to intercept your pizza delivery and redirect it to a battalion in the Donbas.
